Hermes vs Grok Bot — which one?

Hermes is an open-source agent we install on your machine. You pick the models (Nous, Grok OAuth, local, or mixed). Grok Bot is xAI's own product: named bots on cloud computers. We set that up; we do not resell the plan. If you want to own the agent, pick Hermes. If you want a polished cloud team, pick Grok Bot. Many clients start with one.

Do I need a Nous or Grok subscription?

For Hermes on cloud models, yes — you own that account. Nous Portal Plus is $20/month ($5 first month through our invite, new personal subscriptions only, one card per referral). 8gents earns a referral credit; you pay the same either way. For Hermes Local the subscription is optional. For Grok Bot you need an eligible Grok or Cursor plan, billed by them.

Does my data leave my machine?

On Hermes, core agent operations run locally. Your files and memory stay on your hardware. Cloud model calls follow the providers you choose. On Hermes Local, inference stays on your silicon. Grok Bot runs on xAI cloud computers — that's the product.

MCP connection vs custom MCP connector?

If a platform already has MCP, we connect from R1,000. If none exists, we build a bespoke connector from R3,500.

How long until it's working?

Basic Hermes and Grok Bot setups typically complete the same day. Hermes Local starts with a hardware audit. Custom skills and connectors are scoped separately after we map your stack.

What hardware do I need for Hermes Local?

16GB RAM is the comfortable minimum. We audit your machine first and size the model to it — from 7B Q4 on a typical laptop up to 30B+ on bigger rigs. If your hardware won't run it, we tell you before you pay.

How good are local models vs ChatGPT?

Honest answer: strong for admin, drafting, code, and follow-ups — not frontier-grade for every task. The setup includes a guide to what runs best locally and when it's worth using a cloud model for one-off heavy lifts.
